5 tips for cycling in the rain

04 Febrero 2021

As is well known to all cycling enthusiasts, Mallorca is a true paradise for cycling. For this reason, cycling on Mallorca has become a widespread activity thanks to the unbeatable conditions on the island and the infrastructure that has been built up.

However, like everywhere else, it is possible to encounter days that are neither sunny nor mild, and even in the middle of summer rain showers can ruin your training while cycling on Mallorca.

But it doesn't matter, because we are going to give you 5 tips so that you can continue with your cycling training in the rain without it being a problem for you, because the rain should not be an impediment to continue enjoying your cycling. On the contrary, it can be a very useful tool.

1. Nearby circuit

On rainy days, try to ride a circuit close to your home, avoiding muddy terrain as much as possible. Clayey terrain is not very conducive to cycling in the rain, so look for places with good drainage.

The climbs should be steep and sharp, and the descents should be steep and with a succession of curves. This way you will be able to brake better.

2. Short training

The important thing is that you are protected with appropriate clothing; if it is heavy rain, it is best to opt for sets of trousers, jacket and shoe protection. If it's light rain, a poncho may suffice, although it can be a bit of a nuisance if it's very windy.

This is so that your circuit is short but intense, and you can train at 100% for an hour or hour and a half without risking your own health.

3. Keep the bike under control: brake earlier

Riding a bike in the rain can be quite difficult. When you get used to it, the results are much better because you will be able to control your bike in normal conditions.

Since it is easier to slip and fall on wet terrain, and since it tends to slide outwards, the way you brake is decisive: you should do it carefully, feeling the terrain and avoiding sudden braking.

4. Always keep your feet dry

As far as possible, of course. Cycling in the rain will be most effective if you keep your feet as isolated from the weather as possible. This means not wearing cotton socks but neoprene socks.

In addition, you will need to protect your shoes with waterproof covers, or use waterproof shoes. This is important because you will be able to keep your feet dry for longer, without getting cold.

5. Slow down

Just as you would in a car. When it rains, your bike wheels lose grip because of the mud that sticks to them. So that you don't have any surprises during your training session, slow down.

Other tips

Just as you should keep your feet dry, your head should also be protected. That's why wearing a synthetic hat under your helmet is a good idea and will keep you away from possible chills.

On the other hand, if you already know the route, it is advisable not to dodge the puddles but to pass right through the middle of them; this is to avoid even more erosion on the road, especially on mountain roads. But it is important that you know the route, so that you don't take any risks.

On the other hand, hydration is something to keep in mind. When it's cold, almost nobody gets thirsty. But since you're training, it's essential that you hydrate properly, even if you're dripping water all over yourself.

No matter under what circumstances you cycle, snow, rain, hail, cold, whatever, the body loses water through sweat; it is vital that you replenish it before, during and after training.

Cycling on Mallorca can ensure you acquire new skills on the terrain, especially if you go out on rainy days and put the tips we give you into practice.

To sum up, the important thing is to control your bike, not to let your nerves get the better of you, to be well protected from the rain and not to stay out for too long: no matter how good the insulating materials are, if you are exposed to the rain for too long at some point it will soak your bones, and that is never advisable.
