Cycling tips: manual or electronic shifting?

18 Febrero 2021

The world of cycling is continually expanding and innovating, as evidenced by the emergence of electronic shifting for bicycles. Of course, electronic shifting, as opposed to manual shifting, has its pros and cons, which we will explain to you with some cycling tips.

It is true that many cyclists are still hesitant and prefer to opt for the familiar and more economical, but it seems that electronic shifting came to stay. That's why we'll tell you about the advantages and disadvantages of each one so that you can decide.

You can even opt for manual or electronic gears when renting a bike, in case you are travelling without your bike.

Advantages of manual shifting

Economy
It is much cheaper to have manual gears, even if you have to replace them.

Less weight
The manual gears are much lighter as they don't have the extra weight of the battery.

Disadvantages of manual gears

They get out of adjustment very easily
Without a doubt, the manual gears are much more susceptible to maladjustment, as they work by means of the tension of a cable, which continuous use wears out and causes it to lose its tension.

Advantages of electronic shifting

Convenience, reliability, precision
The first advantage is undoubtedly convenience. Just one click and that's it, no need to touch gears or chain sets, as is necessary with a manual shifter. Moreover, once adjusted, there is no need to do it again, as there are no cables to loosen.

On the other hand, the rear derailleur and front derailleur are driven by small motors, which means reliable response in almost any conditions, rain or mud.

The precision is also reflected in those moments of high stress on the derailleur, as the electronic derailleur responds equally well when pedaling.

No slippage
The electronic derailleur is much more reliable and does not get out of adjustment with use, the chain will always run correctly and the components will wear much less.

Maintenance
As a cycling tip, it should be noted that the electronic derailleur does not require very strict maintenance compared to the manual derailleur. Once set up and calibrated, you can pedal as much as you like.

Disadvantages of electronic shifting

Weight
Bikes with electronic gears are heavier because they include the battery, although this has been greatly improved.

Dependence
With a battery, you have to take into account that you have to charge it. Dependency develops if you forget to charge it, which can mean you don't go out or you get stuck in the middle of a ride.

But it's not that bad either, as these batteries usually have a range of 2,000 kilometers, but if you don't charge it, it won't be worth it.

Price
This is one of the drawbacks: the higher price. The electronic gears are more expensive than a manual one, and not only the installation but also if any component needs to be changed, it will be more expensive to replace it.

Other considerations

Following the cycling tips, electronic shifting is also much more common on a road bike than on a MTB, although there are more and more models and prototypes that include it.

The most important thing is weight, but there are already brands such as SRAM and Campagnolo (and of course Shimano, which was the first) that make batteries much lighter, and they integrate much better with handlebars, saddles and frames.

SRAM, for example, installs the batteries directly in the rear derailleur and front derailleur, and also opted for Wireless technology, which is very convenient and gives the bike a cleaner and less loaded appearance.

There are even technologies that allow a kind of automatic shifting (like Shimano's Di2 derailleur), where you can shift only with the rear derailleur and the Di2 system takes care of the chain rings. Of course, you first have to connect the electronic derailleur to a computer or mobile phone and configure these possibilities from there.

As for bike rentals, our shop offers bikes with electronic gears so that you don't have to worry about it on your rides. Not all of them do, of course, we take into account the tastes of our customers.
